History of Vending Machines

The earliest vending machine was invented by Hero of Alexander in the first century. His machine dispensed holy water after accepting a coin. The next development in this area was the introduction of coin-operated tobacco vending machine. It was in early 1615. This was a portable machine and it was made of brass. In 1822, Richard Carlile invented a newspaper vending machine.

The first coin-operated modern vending machine was introduced the early 1880s in London. Ussery Industries of Dallas introduced a talking vending machine in 1970. Vending machines started dispersing basic food items from 1994 and they started competing with the fast moving consumer goods industry. This is the time of specialized vending equipment.
